Secret Santa Gift Ideas UK: Best Picks by Budget for 2026
Quick answer: The best Secret Santa gifts in the UK are useful, universal and inside the agreed budget, which is usually £5 to £15. Good picks include a winter hat, scarf and gloves set, a cordless car vacuum, a kitchen gadget or Pokémon booster packs. Avoid anything too personal, and include a gift receipt so it's easy to swap.
Key takeaways
- Most UK office Secret Santas sit between £5 and £15. In one survey of 1,000 office workers, 48% said they spend £5 to £10 (Instantprint, 2024).
- Pick something practical that almost anyone could use: winter wear, a car gadget, a kitchen tool or a fun collectable.
- Stick to the budget exactly. Going far over it can make others feel awkward.
- Skip jokes that might offend, perfume and anything sized or deeply personal.
- Order early and add a gift receipt. Online orders in the UK usually come with a 14-day right to cancel (Citizens Advice).
Pulling a name out of a hat is the easy part. Then comes the panic: you've drawn the colleague from accounts you've spoken to twice, and you have a tenner to spend. This guide from GenZ Gadgets Store, based in Nottingham, walks you through how to choose a Secret Santa gift that actually gets used, with real ideas sorted by budget, a quick comparison table and answers to the questions people ask most.
How much should you spend on Secret Santa in the UK?
Spend whatever your group agreed, and no more. For most UK workplaces that means £5 to £15. A 2024 Instantprint survey of 1,000 UK office workers found the most common budget was £5 to £10, while research by Love2shop put the average Secret Santa gift at around £14.
If you're the organiser, set one clear figure (for example "£10 maximum") rather than a range. It removes the guesswork and means nobody feels out-gifted. Younger workers can spend more than you'd expect: Love2shop found 18 to 24-year-olds spent an average of £35 per gift, while 55 to 64-year-olds spent around £9 to £10. A firm cap keeps things fair across the whole team.
What makes a good Secret Santa gift?
A good Secret Santa gift is useful, works for almost anyone and feels a little bit fun to unwrap. If you don't know the person well, choose something practical for winter, the car, the kitchen or the desk rather than something tied to their taste or size.
It matters more than you might think. Love2shop estimates around 2.5 million unwanted Secret Santa gifts end up in the bin each year in the UK, worth roughly £32.4 million. A Which? survey of 2,047 UK adults found 21% received an unwanted or unsuitable gift the previous Christmas.
Quick checklist before you buy
- Check the budget and stay within it.
- Ask a friendly question or check any wish list. Name-draw sites such as Drawnames let people add one.
- Think "useful every day": could they use it on the commute, in the car or in the kitchen?
- Avoid sizes, strong scents and risky jokes.
- Add a gift receipt so swapping is easy.

What should you avoid giving for Secret Santa?
Avoid anything that could embarrass, offend or simply not fit. The safest Secret Santa gifts are neutral and practical.
- Rude or "edgy" joke gifts that could upset someone at work.
- Clothes with sizes, such as jumpers or slippers.
- Perfume, aftershave and strongly scented products, which are very personal.
- Alcohol, unless you know the person drinks.
- Anything way over budget, which can make others feel awkward.
Unwanted gifts often get passed on: Instantprint found 42% of office workers donate unwanted Secret Santa gifts to charity and 27% re-gift them. A useful present skips that step entirely.
How do you organise a Secret Santa at work?
Agree a date, a fixed budget and a deadline, then draw names fairly. Free online generators make it simple and stop anyone drawing themselves.
- Make it optional. Not everyone wants to take part, and that's fine.
- Set one budget, such as £10, and share it in writing.
- Draw names in a hat or with an online tool like Drawnames, which supports wish lists and exclusions.
- Include remote staff by sharing a delivery address privately or swapping on a video call.
- Pick a swap date with time to spare before the office closes for Christmas.
When should you buy your Secret Santa gift?
Buy as soon as names are drawn, ideally by late November, so delivery delays don't catch you out. Ordering early also gives you time to wrap it and to swap anything if needed.
When you buy online in the UK, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off period to cancel and return an item, starting the day after delivery (Citizens Advice). GenZ Gadgets Store offers free UK delivery on every order and 30-day returns on unused items, which gives your recipient extra breathing room.
